For the first time in its over 30-year history, 500 of the country’s top chess players will descend on Glendale for the storied California State Open Chess Tournament.
Set for Aug. 29 to Sept. 2, 2025, the event is being organized by dot818 in coordination with the City of Glendale, the American Chess Academy, and the California Chess Federation. It will be held at the Embassy Suites in Glendale.
“For so many of us here, chess is more than a game. It’s a cherished tradition that brings people together,” said David Tonoyan, President of dot818. “We at dot818 are honored to have helped plant the seeds for this tournament’s arrival, and we look forward to seeing how it will continue to flourish in the years to come.”
The tournament is open to players of all levels and builds on the success of last year’s “Battle of the Badges,” a Glendale chess tournament also organized in partnership with dot818, which drew first responders, local officials, and kids from the American Chess Academy.
Now, Glendale is poised to host one of the largest and most prestigious chess events in the country. Glendale Mayor Elen Asatryan said it’s an exciting new chapter for the city’s growing chess culture.
“This is a monumental moment for Glendale,” said Mayor Asatryan. “Hosting the California State Open is a testament to our city’s dedication to education, strategic excellence, and community engagement. We are proud to partner with our very own American Chess Academy and the California Chess Federation to showcase all that Glendale has to offer.”
The California State Open Chess Tournament has traditionally been held in San Diego for the past 14 years, with Los Angeles hosting it before that. Glendale’s thriving local chess community and robust cultural scene make it an ideal location for the tournament.
“We look forward to the California State Open Chess Tournament being in Glendale for the first time,” added Armen Ambartsoumian, President of the American Chess Academy. “I see it as a chance for our community to come together, inspire the next generation of players, and celebrate the growing chess culture in our city.”
The dates of the California State Open Chess Tournament coincide with the lead-up to Glendale Tech Week in September, which dot818 is also involved with.
We invite fellow businesses, community leaders, and chess enthusiasts to support the event through sponsorship, partnerships, or volunteer opportunities. Please reach out for more information
